Playing the game free-to-play you will get a chunk of the whole pie (rather than a mere taste) per say. Guild Wars 2 has two main selling points for me, where it is better than any other MMO I have ever played (and I played many). It's open world and it's combat/buildcraft system. The rest is either subpar or equal when compared to other MMO's.

As you level up your character, you unlock new utility slots- Slot 1 at level 11, Slot 2 at level 15, and Slot 3 at level 19. Utility skills are based on profession, but some are also race dependent. Utility skills can range from damage block buffs to area healing, power boosts, immobilization of enemies, and traps that prevent your enemies
The highest level guild I'm in is 38, the second is in the upper 20s, the third in the lower 20s (a networking guild, so upgrades are not super actively worked on), the other two are a dead guild and a troll name guild. Personally I couldn't care less, I don't use the guild halls regularly for anything. Kudospop •. 40-41, maxed mine.
All characters adjusted automatically to level 80. Guild Wars 2 world vs. world battles consist of three entire servers fighting against each other in battles that last two weeks, and rage on maps
The reasons to buy the core game if you're enjoying the game is having free currency to play with. The daily log in rewards will give you laurels which are very hard to get as a free to play player, and give you access to certain rewards at max level that would take a free player ages to get.
